Virginia Wise

Virginia Wise has been named the 2013 CFIRE Student of the Year in Transportation.

Ms. Wise is a graduate research assistant with the Intermodal Freight Transportation Institute (IFTI) at the University of Memphis. She is currently seeking a Masters of Civil Engineering with a concentration in Transportation with plans to graduate in May 2014. Prior to beginning her research with IFTI, she received her Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics and Physics. She considers transportation to be a strong complement to her degrees and her desire to help people through math and science applications in the real world.

During her graduate research, Ms. Wise has been heavily involved with the West Tennessee STEM Hub as it works to promote STEM interest in the region through outreach and educational support. She has also helped coordinate the department’s summer programs in transportation engineering for high school students, and she is devoted to inspiring students to be involved in transportation. Additionally, she is collaborating in a research project to promote livability in freight-centric urban areas and will devote her thesis research to this topic. Involved in numerous other transportation-related projects that incorporate data collection strategies, transportation policy and planning, and freight studies, Ms. Wise is extremely proficient and well suited to thrive in the field of transportation.

This award will be presented at the Council of University Transportation Centers Annual Awards Banquet to be held on January 11, 2014 in Washington, DC.

The US DOT has released the draft Primary Freight Network.

This week’s Talking Freight is also devoted to An Overview of the Draft Highway Primary Freight Network.
