University of Toledo
The Intermodal Transportation Institute (ITI) at the University of Toledo (UT) was formed to develop technology-enabled intermodal transportation systems and supply chains that promote economic development and quality of life. Through the Center for Geographic Information Sciences and Applied Geographics (GISAG), UT’s expertise is in the development of specialized GIS software for a variety of transportation applications.
The University of Toledo initiative began in the mid-1990s with public and private sector organizations encouraging the University of Toledo to develop a center focusing on transportation, logistics, and supply chain issues. The ITI and GISAG serve as the focal point for GIS-based contract research on campus and in the wider regional community. Since its founding in 2003, the faculty and staff of GISAG have participated in sponsored research and outreach projects approaching $18 million in funding. In the area of transportation, GISAG played a pivotal role in data acquisition and management for a number of freight projects. The center is home of a comprehensive freight data repository and provides information outlets through the Great Lakes Maritime Information Clearinghouse and the Midwest FreightView online GIS application.
